I love the neck sock. I have two grown sons and husband, and I’d like to make them for them as well as myself!
I learned to knit this year and only know how to do the knit stitch. I have been making those fuzzy eyelash yarn scarves where I just knit every row, about 12 stitches wide, and I use huge wooden needles, maybe size 22 or something. Can’t remember right now. I’m so new at this knitting that I don’t know what a medium black yarn is.
I’ve seen worsted weight, sport weight, baby yarn, etc. Is there a specific name or brand or number of ply you could tell me, so I can find it? Thanks so much for the directions. Hope I can soon figure out how to purl. Haven’t tried it. Need to find a site with directions for that, I guess!

I would like better instructions for the neck sock. Is there a mistake in the cast on 40st ? Is it knit in the round?

  4. Check out the comments in the Neck Sock Post for a much more detailed answer. I have clarified some of the instructions as others have asked the same questions.

The one I made was cast on with 40 stitches, That worked for my needle size and yarn. You might need to make a test square with your yarn to see how many stitches are in a inch and then just measure your head and multiply (keep in mind this will stretch so don’t make it too loose). The important part is that the stitches be a multiple of 4 for the pattern to work.

I knitted this in the round on circular needles, but I don’t see any reason why a seam would ruin the project if all you had was straight needles…it just might not scrunch as well if it has a seam.

I tried this on a circular needle that is 16 inches long (the shortest that I could find) and it does not come close to working because the yarn does not reach from one end to the other on these needles. I have it stretched to the max and it is too tight. I cannot find shorter circular needles. What can you recommend?

  6. Humm, I know the first couple rows that I do are pretty tight, I would say even a bit difficult. Starting is the hardest part for me as well. But once I make it past the first couple rows everything loosens up nicely. Once you have made your test square and know how many stitches you need per inch for your specific yarn and needles. I would recommend putting on the fewest stitches that you can to stay near that number and stretching the cast on row as tight as possible to make it to the second row, as I said it should loosen up for you as you get some more rows on there.

Once you have a couple rows knitted try lightly slipping it over your head to see if the additional stitches make it too big.

If you do find it is too big I can think of two things to fix that. Knitting this on flat needles and closing it with a seam, I don’t think that would hurt the finished project too much. Or putting a drawstring in your finished product.
There are these really neat needles that one of my friend’s is in love with. I don’t own a pair but I am envious of them, they are nice and short.

  7. HI Nikki!

I found your blog because of your neck sock posting. What a great idea!

I see you are in puppy heaven (?)

We are getting our golden retriever pup from the breeder on January 19th, maybe we could share puppy success and challenge stories.

I have found Cesar Millan’s tips very helpful with my past dogs, and also Brad Pattison’s

    Cesar Millan:

    Brad Pattison:

Brad’s tip for getting the dog to sit works really well. I think the mistake we all make is that we talk to our dogs far too much. Brad teaches you to get the dog to sit at the snap of a finger – and yes, it really works!

Please contact me if you have dog problems, I do a lot of research on the internet, and may know of some solutions.

By the way, your post on Loki “forgetting” what he learned is a stage that pups go through.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
    Sue C

    Hi Nikki,
I found your blog because I was looking for crock pot recipes for pork. (In my case, I had a few pounds of fantastic looking meat that I trimmed off of some ribs that I got – What was that bucher thinking?)
Anyhow, Thank you for your blog. Your recipe convinced me that my approach was reasonable (and to buy some Guiness.) I noted that you were also in Dealware, so thought that I would give a little shout out. “To the first state!”
    Good Luck with your business.

You’re going to think I am daft but here was my first plan for the bill. I was going to start with a long row, decreasing each row until I had a triangle then immediately begin increasing until I had a matching triangle connected to the other side by the tip. THEN I was going to fold this over and sew the to sides together. As I was planning this rocket science a friend in my knitting group managed not to roll her eyes as she politely suggested that I make a square and fold it in half…ummm, yeah, why don’ t I just do that.

OMG…Toooooo funny!!!! You’re like… my new best friend!!!! A good dose of “Duh”… but thank God we’re cute and charming!!!
    xox’s!!

Have been looking for the perfect ninja neck sock, thanks! Can you give ballpark number for cast on for number nine needles in worsted weight yarn?
